Ayurvedic View of Eczema (Vicharchika)

In Ayurveda, Eczema is known as Vicharchika, a type of Kushta (skin disorder). It develops when there is an imbalance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—but especially Vata and Kapha. When these doshas become aggravated due to poor diet, weak digestion, stress, or exposure to irritants, they disturb the skin’s natural balance and immunity.

Vata causes dryness, scaling, and roughness;
Pitta leads to redness, burning, and inflammation;
Kapha creates oozing, thickening, and itching.

Together, they block skin channels (Srotas), allowing toxins (Ama) to accumulate in the blood and skin tissue. This buildup results in chronic skin irritation, patches, and flare-ups that come and go.

Ayurveda explains that weak digestion (Agni) plays a central role. When Agni is low, the body cannot digest food properly, leading to toxin formation. These toxins travel through the bloodstream and settle in the skin, making it sensitive, inflamed, and reactive. Stress, irregular sleep, processed foods, or environmental allergens further disturb doshas and worsen flare-ups.

Ayurvedic management focuses on cleansing the body, pacifying doshas, soothing inflammation, and strengthening skin immunity. Herbs like Neem, Haridra (Turmeric), Manjistha, Guduchi, and Khadira help purify the blood and reduce itching, dryness, and inflammation. Internal medicines improve digestion and eliminate toxins, while external applications such as medicated oils, herbal pastes, and soothing creams relieve irritation.

In chronic or severe cases, Panchakarma—such as Virechan (Pitta detox), Raktamokshan (blood purification), and Takra Dhara—may be recommended for deeper healing.

Lifestyle corrections are essential. Ayurveda advises avoiding spicy, fried, fermented foods, stress, excess heat exposure, and chemical-based cosmetics. A cooling, balanced diet, proper sleep, meditation, and gentle skincare help keep symptoms under control.

Overall, Ayurveda views eczema not just as a skin problem but as a systemic imbalance, and therefore provides a holistic, long-term solution by restoring balance, reducing toxins, and rebuilding healthy, strong skin from within.
