Ayurveda on Tinea (Fungal Skin Infection)
Tinea, commonly known as a fungal skin infection or Dadru in Ayurveda, is a condition where circular, itchy, red patches develop on the skin. Ayurveda explains this problem as a result of imbalance in Kapha and Pitta doshas, combined with the accumulation of excess moisture, heat, and impurities in the skin. When these doshas get aggravated, they create a warm and humid environment on the skin surface, allowing fungal growth to increase.
According to Ayurveda, weak digestion (Agni) also plays a major role. When digestion slows down, the body forms toxins known as Ama, which mix with sweat and oil on the skin. This weakens skin immunity and makes fungal infections more likely to spread. Excessive sweating, tight synthetic clothing, poor hygiene, sharing towels or clothes, and a humid climate further worsen the condition.
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on three main goals:
-
Reducing Pitta-Kapha imbalance
-
Removing fungal toxins from the skin
-
Strengthening skin immunity to prevent recurrence
Herbs like Neem, Khadir, Manjistha, Haridra (Turmeric), Triphala, and Bakuchi are widely used due to their strong antifungal, detoxifying, and blood-cleansing effects. Neem baths, herbal pastes, and medicated oils help reduce itching, redness, and ring-shaped patches.
Internal Ayurvedic medicines improve digestion, purify blood, and enhance natural skin defense. External applications dry the fungal area, decrease moisture, and stop fungal growth. Panchakarma therapies like Virechan (detox), Raktamokshan (blood purification), and medicated steam may be recommended in chronic or recurrent cases.
Diet and lifestyle correction are equally important. Ayurveda advises avoiding spicy, oily, sugary foods, and dairy combinations that increase Kapha and Pitta. Wearing loose cotton clothes, keeping the skin dry, and maintaining good personal hygiene support faster healing.
Overall, Ayurveda offers a holistic, long-term solution by healing both the skin and the underlying imbalance, helping prevent frequent fungal infections naturally.
