Ayurvedic View of Hair Fall (Khalitya)

In Ayurveda, hair fall is known as Khalitya, a condition that develops when the natural balance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—is disturbed. Among these, Pitta dosha plays the most important role because it governs metabolism, heat, and the health of hair roots (romakoopas). When Pitta becomes excessive due to stress, anger, hot climate, spicy foods, late-night sleep, or frequent use of chemicals, it overheats the scalp and weakens hair follicles. As a result, hair becomes thin, weak, and falls out easily.

Vata imbalance further dries the scalp, causing rough hair, split ends, and increased breakage. Kapha imbalance may trigger dandruff, oiliness, and clogged hair roots, making the scalp unhealthy and prone to infection. Together, these disturbed doshas reduce the nourishment reaching the hair, leading to gradual thinning and shedding.

Ayurveda also emphasizes the role of Agni (digestive fire). When digestion is weak, the body produces Ama, or metabolic toxins. These toxins circulate in the bloodstream and block tiny channels (srotas) that supply nutrients to hair roots. Poor nourishment leads to dull, weak, and fragile hair. Emotional stress, irregular lifestyle, nutrient-deficient diet, hormonal changes, and excessive heat from hair styling tools can accelerate the problem.

Ayurvedic management focuses on cooling and balancing Pitta, improving scalp circulation, nourishing hair roots, and strengthening digestion. Herbs like Bhringraj, Amla, Brahmi, Neem, Jatamansi, Yashtimadhu, and Triphala are commonly used to promote natural hair growth and soothe inflammation. Medicated oils such as Bhringraj oil, Neelibhringadi taila, Coconut oil, or Brahmi oil help cool and nourish the scalp while reducing dryness and hair fall.

Lifestyle correction is equally important. Ayurveda recommends a calm daily routine, adequate sleep, stress management through Yoga and meditation, regular oil massage, and avoiding excessive heat exposure or harsh chemical treatments. A diet rich in cooling and nourishing foods—like ghee, Amla, leafy greens, nuts, and whole grains—helps strengthen hair from within.

Overall, Ayurveda views hair fall not just as a cosmetic issue but as a sign of internal imbalance. By addressing the root cause, improving hair nutrition, and balancing doshas, Ayurveda offers a long-lasting and natural solution for healthy, strong hair.
